Suffer From Back Pain

The Sports and Physical Therapy Center Comments on Research Findings: Up to 85% of Adults Suffer From Back Pain

A Majority of Americans Will Experience Back Pain During Their Lifetime;
the Sports and Physical Therapy Center Explains How Physical Therapists Can Help

EUREKA, Mo., November 14, 2011 – According to the Sports and Physical Therapy Center in Eureka, Missouri, back problems are one of the most common chronic pain complaints reported by the clinic’s patients. The center’s observation is substantiated by numerous studies. A frequently quoted Lancet article estimates that between 70% to 85% of adults will have back pain at some point in their lifetime.(1) Furthermore, a National Center for Health Statistics survey found that 1 in 4 American adults suffer from back pain at any given time – more than 28% reported low back pain within the prior three months.(2)

“These research findings probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has ever dealt with chronic or recurring back pain. The problem is that many people have come to assume that back pain is normal, and they delay seeking treatment until the pain becomes unbearable,” stated Sean Quinn, owner of the Sports and Physical Therapy Center. “However, physical therapy has the capacity to reduce, eliminate, and even prevent back pain. My team and I have found physical therapy to be extremely effective in treating patients with back pain, and numerous studies concur.”

Quinn cites a review article published by the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, which found physical therapy coupled with anti-inflammatory medication to be the most effective treatment for symptomatic lumbar degenerative disc disease, one of the most common causes of low back pain.(3) In addition, a study published in Spine examined Medicare patients with low back pain, and found that those who sought physical therapy sooner achieved better outcomes. The findings showed that individuals who received treatment within four weeks of suffering low back pain were less likely to have epidural steroid injections, lumbar surgery, or frequent return visits to their physician.(4)

Physical therapists are experts in body mechanics, with extensive training in anatomy, physiology, and various treatment modalities. They use a wide variety of techniques to help the body heal from injury, illness, pain, and reduced mobility. Because they rely exclusively on hands-on treatments and individualized strength and flexibility training programs, physical therapists can help patients avoid prescription drugs, injections, and surgery.

Upon assessing a patient’s condition, the therapist will develop a customized treatment plan based on the physician’s diagnosis. This may include modalities such as manual therapy, joint mobilization, neuromuscular re-education, myofascial release, and spinal and joint stabilization, to name a few. Therapeutic exercise is also commonly used to build back strength and increase flexibility. A Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center survey found that 44% of back-pain sufferers found exercise “helped a lot” in relieving their pain; and 58% wished they had done more exercises to strengthen their back in the first place.(5)

“There’s no need for anyone to live with back pain, when relief is readily available,” asserted Quinn. “Physical therapists can identify and treat the underlying cause of pain, and eliminate it for good. But it’s important for people to seek treatment at the first sign of pain, because conditions almost always worsen when left untreated. The good news is that most health insurance plans cover physical therapy when patients obtain a physical therapy prescription from their doctor.”

Quinn and his team at the Sports and Physical Therapy Center provide a wide range of services at their state-of-the-art clinic in Eureka, which is frequented by patients throughout St. Louis County. The center’s highly skilled physical therapists have earned a reputation for helping back-pain sufferers achieve successful physical therapy results. Quinn welcomes prospective patients to tour the facility or call with any questions they may have.

Equal Pay for Equal Services

The Sports and Physical Therapy Center Supports Proposed Legislation to Mandate Equal Pay for Equal Services

Physical Therapists in Missouri Seek Changes in Health Insurance Carriers’ Practices Concerning Reimbursement and Co-Pays for Physical Therapy Services

EUREKA, Mo., October 31, 2011 – The Sports and Physical Therapy Center in Eureka, Missouri, is among the many private-practice physical therapy clinics voicing support for proposed legislation that would require health insurance companies to provide the same reimbursement to private-practice providers as to hospital-run physical therapy clinics. Physical therapists in private practices contend that health insurance carriers discriminate against small businesses by offering more favorable contracts – with higher reimbursement and lower patient co-pays – to hospital-based physical therapy providers.

According to EqualPay4EqualServices.com, health insurance companies pay private-practice physical therapy clinics 75% to 100% less than hospital-run clinics for the same services, and require patient co-pays that are up to five times higher than for hospital-based treatment.(1) Private-practice physical therapists assert that reimbursement and co-pays should be the same regardless of the setting in which physical therapy services are performed.

Independent physical therapists found support for their cause among state government officials, with Representative Ellen Brandom sponsoring Missouri House Bill (HB) 318 and Senator Kurt Schaefer sponsoring Missouri Senate Bill (SB) 148. HB 318 was incorporated into Representative Chris Molendorp’s omnibus bill, HB 669, which was voted “do pass” in an Executive Session and referred to the Rules Committee for consideration to be debated by a full House.(2) The Senate had not taken up SB 148 as of the last day of session.(3)

“If the proposed legislation is made law, it would end the disparity that exists between hospitals and private-practice physical therapy clinics in terms of insurance reimbursement and patient co-pays,” said Sean Quinn, owner of The Sports and Physical Therapy Center in Eureka, Missouri. “Even though there is no difference in the quality of treatment provided by hospitals and private clinics, hospitals receive more favorable contracts solely due to their bargaining power.”

Quinn remarked that insurance carriers’ current practices hurt patients as much as they hurt private clinics. “If patients wish to go to an independently owned clinic – perhaps it’s more convenient to their home or office, or has physical therapists with expertise in their particular condition – they’re forced to bear the financial burden of higher co-pays. The only other option is to go to a hospital-run physical therapy clinic, which takes away patients’ freedom of choice.”

As a result of the present system, Quinn noted that many private-practice clinics are struggling, and some are even forced out of business. “My team and I have been fortunate that our physical therapy patients see the value in our services and continue to choose The Sports and Physical Therapy Center for their treatment. However, there are many private clinics that face the very real possibility of closing. Not only are they losing patients to hospital clinics, they’re trying to cover their costs with minimal reimbursement. This also makes it more difficult for them to hire and retain physical therapists, because lower reimbursement means they can’t offer the same salaries as hospitals.”

When private clinics are forced to close, there is less competition in the market – which Quinn feels is a losing proposition for patients. “In a competitive environment, patients benefit from greater quality and innovation. Clinics strive to provide top-notch facilities, cutting-edge equipment, the newest treatment techniques, and a wide array of services – they’ll do everything they can to cater to patients’ needs and give patients a reason to choose them. But when there is no competition, there is little incentive for providers to make the same effort. Patients may have to wait longer for appointments or travel farther for treatment, and they may even experience a lower quality of service. That’s why it’s in everyone’s best interest for private clinics to stay in business, and why equal pay for equal service is such an important issue in healthcare today.”

Physical therapists provide rehabilitative services to patients recovering from an injury, illness, or surgery, and can also provide relief from chronic aches and pain. As licensed healthcare professionals, physical therapists specialize in treating musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Physical therapy is highly effective in treating a variety of conditions, and is often the solution of choice for patients seeking to avoid drugs, surgery, and other invasive procedures. Among the treatments employed by physical therapists are manual therapy, massage, therapeutic exercise, posture training, and balance training. They also use passive modalities such as heat, cold, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound, to name a few.

Quinn and his team at The Sports and Physical Therapy Center offer a wide range of services to patients in St. Louis County. The clinic has been in business for seven years, and recently celebrated its second anniversary in its present location at 322 North Central Avenue in Eureka, Missouri. The state-of-the-art facility, highly skilled physical therapists, and successful outcomes continue to draw patients to The Sports and Physical Therapy Center.

“Our physical therapy results speak for themselves, and help to generate referral business from physicians and patients. We aspire to remain a leading provider of physical therapy in Eureka, and fair contracts with insurance carriers will help us achieve that goal,” stated Quinn. “I sincerely hope the ‘equal pay for equal services’ legislation passes, so that our clinic – and all of the other private-practice clinics in Missouri – can continue serving the patients who have come to rely on us. It’s very rewarding to help patients attain a better quality of life, whether it’s by enabling them to regain their original level of function or eliminating their pain. I hope we’ll have the opportunity to keep doing what we do best, and that patients will always have a choice for their physical therapy treatment.”

Fixing Injuries

Fixing Injuries: Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until It Hurts

If you’ve experienced an injury but are not in severe pain, you may wonder, “What is a physical therapist going to do for me?” Some people delay treatment until the pain becomes debilitating; however, this can exacerbate the condition and cause even more damage. Physical therapy provides effective treatment for a variety of common injuries; it can reduce pain, improve mobility, and heal the underlying cause of your discomfort. An individualized physical therapy treatment plan can even help patients avoid surgery that could potentially result from ignoring injuries and allowing the damage to escalate.

What Is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy consists of active and passive treatments that can restore health to patients who have experienced loss of mobility due to illness or injury. It has the capacity to relieve pain, improve range of motion and muscle efficiency, help prevent re-injury, and improve a patient’s overall quality of life.

Many different conditions can benefit from physical therapy treatment, including:

  • Lower back pain
  • Knee, foot, or hip pain
  • Neck or shoulder pain
  • Wrist or elbow pain
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or medial collateral ligament (MCL) tears
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder
  • Headaches
  • Repetitive strain injuries

No matter where you hurt, a physical therapist can help diagnose and treat the problem. A customized treatment plan will help you enjoy your favorite activities again – free of pain. So don’t wait until your aches or stiff joints become unbearable. Call your physician at the first sign of pain, and request a prescription for physical therapy.

What Is a Physical Therapist’s Role in Treating Injuries?

When you seek help from a qualified physical therapist, you’ve made a smart decision. Licensed physical therapists have undergone years of education and specialized training, and are skilled in diagnosing and treating injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Following a thorough evaluation, your physical therapist will assess your condition and determine the underlying cause of your pain. He or she will then create a customized physical therapy treatment plan designed to help you build strength and endurance.

Depending on your specific condition and long-term goals, your physical therapist may implement a variety of different techniques, exercises, and stretches. Your customized plan will include treatments that are targeted to your unique needs, helping to reduce your pain and return you to your daily routines as quickly as possible.

Why Is It Important to Seek Physical Therapy Treatment Right Away?

Most healthcare providers recommend treating injuries as soon as they occur. Prompt treatment not only alleviates discomfort, but it can also minimize damage to the affected area and other parts of your body. For example, when you hurt your back, your body may compensate for the injury. You might unconsciously alter your movement to reduce the strain on your back, which can stress your knee or hip joints and lead to further injuries. Seeking treatment early can help avoid compounding your problem.

Physical therapy can also be considered a form of preventative treatment because it can help you avoid further injury – or in many cases, even surgery. Physical therapy and rehab services do not involve drugs, injections, or other invasive procedures. Patients can get the most out of their therapy and minimize recovery time by seeking treatment immediately following an injury or illness. Those who delay too long may cause irreparable damage – which can make surgery unavoidable.

What Should You Look For in a Qualified Physical Therapist?

At a minimum, a qualified physical therapist will have an advanced degree in physical therapy, industry certification, and state licensure. A good physical therapist will listen to you and thoroughly evaluate your condition before designing your treatment plan. He or she will answer your questions, address your concerns, and make you feel at ease. As your partner in health and wellness, your physical therapist will establish treatment goals that are based on your lifestyle and individual needs.

Choosing the right physical therapist is a personal decision. While state laws require a doctor’s prescription to seek physical therapy treatment, you still have the right to choose the physical therapy center that best meets your needs.

Preventing an Operation

Can Seeing a Physical Therapist Prevent an Operation?

Physical therapy is a highly effective treatment for a variety of injuries. In fact, one of the many benefits of physical therapy is that it can help patients avoid surgery for knee injuries, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or meniscus tears; shoulder problems, like a damaged rotator cuff; and other musculoskeletal issues. Physical therapists can also help relieve lower back and osteoarthritis-related pain without surgery, enabling patients to regain their mobility and achieve optimum health. If you are considering an operation to repair damage or relieve pain, you should first look into whether physical therapy is a viable alternative for your condition.

Physical Therapists Alleviate Pain Without Surgery or Drugs

Skilled physical therapists are experts in treating musculoskeletal problems that can cause debilitating pain and limited mobility. Some symptoms can be so severe that they interfere with work, hobbies and other daily activities, which is why it’s important to seek treatment before the condition progresses.

A physical therapist will typically begin an evaluation by assessing your strength, mobility and body mechanics when performing certain activities. This will enable the therapist to treat the cause of your pain or physical limitations and develop an individualized treatment plan that will allow your body to heal without drugs, surgery or other invasive procedures. Using a variety of proven techniques, your physical therapist can restore function, reduce pain, improve mobility and prevent disability.

For many patients, a physical therapy program is all that is needed to successfully treat conditions such as muscle strains, sprains, joint or back pain, tendonitis, sports injuries and repetitive-motion ailments, among others. It can also help relieve pain resulting from arthritis and degenerative disc disease.

Discover How a Physical Therapy Program Can Bring You Lasting Pain Relief

Operations can be expensive, stressful and require a lengthy recovery period. Physical therapy can achieve effective results without the common drawbacks of surgery.

As an example, let’s take a look at a physical therapist’s typical, non-surgical approach to two common conditions: knee injuries and shoulder pain.

Knee Injuries and Physical Therapy

When a patient has been diagnosed with a torn muscle or medial collateral ligament (MCL), the physical therapist begins with a thorough evaluation to determine the range of motion and extent of damage. A custom physical therapy plan is then designed to bring the patient back to full mobility. Reducing pain is the first goal. Next, the focus is on regaining full range of motion, as well as strengthening the muscles surrounding the knee joint to improve stability. Strong muscles can better absorb jolts and prevent re-injury by keeping stress from going through the knee joint.

Physical Therapy for Shoulder Pain

Relief from pain resulting from rotator cuff and other shoulder problems also begins with an evaluation by a qualified physical therapist. The first stage of treatment is decreasing inflammation, and then returning full range of motion to the shoulder with flexibility and strengthening exercises. Physical therapy encourages correct form, which increases muscle efficiency and helps to prevent re-injury. Selective conditioning exercises can isolate specific shoulder muscles to improve strength and range of motion, which can help accelerate a return to full function and normal activities.

Even if you suffer serious knee, hip, back or shoulder injuries, a specially designed physical therapy treatment plan can help you attain pre-injury strength and range of motion without surgery. In cases where an operation is unavoidable, physical therapy can help you build strength before and after the procedure, which will enable you to get maximum benefit from your surgery and recover faster.

Avoid Injuries and Remain Pain-Free With Physical Therapy

Many patients prefer to avoid the risks, expense and downtime associated with surgery; and a good physical therapy treatment plan makes that possible. Physical therapy is a gentle, pain-free way to stimulate the body to heal itself without drugs or invasive procedures.

In addition, there are benefits of physical therapy that cannot be replicated through surgery. Physical therapists take an active role in educating patients about keeping their joints strong and stable, using correct form and maintaining flexibility, which can help to prevent future injuries. To promote optimal health after treatment, physical therapists can provide a wellness plan. In this way, your physical therapist can be your partner in lifelong health and wellness.

When you do your research, the facts are clear: physical therapy offers a total package of pain relief, injury rehabilitation and education to put you back on track to a better quality of life.

Find a Qualified Physical Therapist to Meet Your Specific Needs

If you are suffering from pain or decreased mobility anywhere in your body, don’t wait to address it. You could make the pain worse or prolong your recovery time by putting off treatment.

If you’re ready to explore your physical therapy options, the first step is to request a prescription for physical therapy from your physician. You can then schedule an evaluation with a trained physical therapist, who will assess your condition and determine the appropriate physical therapy treatment plan.

Missouri residents seeking physical therapy services in St. Louis have many options. Start by asking family, friends and healthcare providers for recommendations. How to Find the Right Physical Therapist

How to Find the Right Physical Therapist

Once you’ve made the decision to seek physical therapy treatment for pain relief or injury rehabilitation, how do you find the right physical therapist? This is an important decision; after all, you’ll be putting your recovery in the physical therapist’s hands. You’ll want to partner with a physical therapist who is licensed, qualified, knowledgeable, and capable of treating your specific condition. Knowing what to look for is key to choosing the best physical therapist for your needs.

What Are the Qualifications of a Good Physical Therapist?

Qualified physical therapists are licensed by the state in which they practice; they are also required to pass a national licensure examination. They undergo extensive education and are required to hold a graduate degree in physical therapy. You’ll find the best physical therapists strive to keep their skills sharp and up-to-date through continuing education and training.

Good physical therapists are knowledgeable in many areas, including anatomy, physiology, body mechanics, and the cardiopulmonary system, to name a few. They are highly trained in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal problems. In determining the right physical therapist for you, you’ll also want to look for someone who is a good listener, who takes an interest in you as a person, and who is committed to helping you overcome your pain or limitation. This enables your therapist to create a customized physical therapy treatment plan that addresses your unique needs, so you can attain optimal physical condition and resume your regular activities as quickly as possible.

Points to Consider When Seeking Physical Therapy Treatment

Every patient will consider different factors when seeking a physical therapist. Yours might include:

  • Convenient Location and Hours – Depending on your injury or condition, your physical therapy plan may require multiple visits each week, over several weeks or months. Finding a physical therapy center close to your home or work may be a priority for you. Parking might also be a consideration. If you don’t have much flexibility in your work schedule, you might seek a clinic that can accommodate appointments before or after your normal work hours.

  • Quality of Care – It’s possible that the most highly regarded physical therapy centers may be located a distance from your house or office. Are you able and willing to travel farther or rearrange your schedule to obtain the highest-quality care?

  • Recommendations – If any of your friends or family have undergone physical therapy treatment, ask them about their experience and if they would return to the same physical therapist. Your physician may also be able to recommend a good therapist based on other patients’ outcomes with a particular center.

  • Current Licensing – Most reputable physical therapy centers will allow only currently licensed physical therapists to treat patients. Still, it’s a good idea to verify a physical therapist’s credentials.

  • Up-to-Date Equipment – You may want to have a look at a physical therapy center’s equipment before committing to treatment there. Those that are confident in the quality of their equipment will generally be happy to provide a tour of the facility. If the equipment appears outdated or in poor condition, you may want to look elsewhere.

  • Comfort Level – It’s important that you feel comfortable with the clinic’s staff and your physical therapist. You may wish to contact the physical therapy office prior to your first appointment and speak with a physical therapist. You can discuss whether he or she has worked with other patients with your condition, and what outcomes were achieved. Establishing a good rapport is important, as you and your therapist will be working together as partners in your treatment.

A Qualified Physical Therapist Can Help You Heal and Find Relief From Pain

If you are feeling pain or discomfort anywhere in your body, don’t ignore it. When the underlying cause is left untreated, the problem is likely to worsen over time. In addition, you may end up adjusting your body and movements to accommodate the pain, which often causes additional muscle or joint strain. Physical therapy can bring relief from the pain associated with a wide variety of conditions.

Your first visit to a physical therapy center will include a thorough evaluation, and your physical therapist will use special techniques to assess the cause of your symptoms. Your therapist will then develop a customized physical therapy treatment plan, based on your condition, ability, strength, and range of motion.

Many patients find physical therapy to be the most effective treatment for joint and lower back pain, sports injuries, osteoarthritis, muscle strains and sprains, and repetitive motion ailments. It can also help with rehabilitation from auto or work accidents, knee and hip replacement surgery, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or meniscus tears, and heart surgery. An added benefit of physical therapy is a stronger, more flexible and pain-free body – without the use of drugs or invasive procedures.

Guidelines for Choosing a Physical Therapist

The Sports and Physical Therapy Center Presents Guidelines for Choosing a Physical Therapist

Clinic’s Guidelines Highlight Top Five Factors to Consider for Patients Seeking a Qualified Physical Therapist in Missouri

EUREKA, Mo., October 3, 2011 – When it comes to choosing a physical therapist, first-time patients may feel a little overwhelmed – particularly if they don’t know the state regulations governing the practice of physical therapy or the type of questions that should be asked of providers. To assist these individuals in their information-gathering and decision-making process, the Sports and Physical Therapy Center of Eureka has published guidelines that prospective patients can use when researching and selecting a physical therapist in Missouri.

“Some people find it daunting to choose a practitioner in a specialized field like physical therapy, especially if they’re not familiar with the educational standards and state licensing requirements for our profession. That’s why we’ve published guidelines that patients can use as a checklist when choosing a physical therapist,” explained Sean Quinn, founder of the Sports and Physical Therapy Center.

Quinn recommends that prospective patients take the following five factors into consideration when choosing a physical therapist:

  1. Education – While some schools offer undergraduate programs in physical therapy, a graduate degree from an accredited physical therapy program is currently required in order to take the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE). When researching physical therapists, individuals should verify that the practitioner they’re considering holds a master’s degree (or higher) from a program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

  1. Licensing – While licensing requirements vary by state, all candidates must pass the NPTE to be eligible for state licensure. The licensing body in Missouri is the State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts. In addition to passing the NPTE, applicants for licensure in Missouri must:
  • Provide evidence of completion of a physical therapy education program deemed reputable by the state board. Those who graduated prior to December 31, 2002, must hold at least a bachelor’s degree, while those who graduated after that date must hold a master’s degree or higher.
  • Submit official transcripts listing all relevant courses, grades received, degree(s) awarded and graduation date.
  • Provide evidence of good moral character and innocence of any unprofessional or dishonorable conduct.
  • Submit an activities statement listing employment as well as professional and other activities since high school, or for the past 10 years.
  • Take a board-administered test on the laws and rules related to the practice of physical therapy in Missouri, and earn a passing score of 75% or higher.

Additional documentation is required for applicants who have had legal name changes, were licensed in other jurisdictions, are not native English-speakers or completed their physical therapy training in another country. Prospective patients can be confident that physical therapists licensed to practice in Missouri have fulfilled all requirements to the satisfaction of the state board.

  1. Continuing Education – Most states require that physical therapists complete continuing education to maintain their licensure. In Missouri, all physical therapists must complete at least 30 hours of continuing education every two years. This helps to ensure that practitioners are aware of the latest treatments and best practices in the field, no matter how long ago they completed their degree.

  1. Experience – Physical therapists can have varying levels of experience and expertise, as the practice encompasses a wide range of treatments and specializations. While most people associate physical therapy with rehabilitation for individuals who have suffered an injury or undergone surgery, it is also used to provide relief from chronic pain and as preventative care to help patients achieve and maintain optimal health. Physical therapy can focus on many different parts of the body; it can be used to treat back, hip, knee and foot pain, arthritis-related joint pain, sports injuries and repetitive strain injuries, to name but a few examples. When choosing a physical therapist, patients should ask each practitioner what experience he or she has with their particular condition, what the treatment(s) will involve and what the outcomes have been for other patients. The answers to these questions – as well as the practitioner’s willingness to listen to and address any concerns – can help patients find the right physical therapist for their needs.

  1. Referrals – In addition to doing background research on physical therapy providers, individuals should ask family, friends, colleagues and neighbors for recommendations. There’s a good chance that someone they know has undergone physical therapy and can recommend a practitioner. If not, the Internet is a great source for reviews and testimonials from current and former patients. Hearing and reading about the experiences of others who have had successful treatment can give first-time patients confidence and encouragement as they prepare to undergo physical therapy.

“My hope is that these guidelines will make it easier for patients to find a physical therapist they feel comfortable with, and give them peace of mind about the quality of care they will receive,” said Quinn. “For those seeking a physical therapist in St. Louis, the Sports and Physical Therapy Center in nearby Eureka is an excellent option with a proven track record of success.”

Quinn noted that all of the therapists within his practice have a graduate degree from an accredited program and maintain current state licensure. “We strive to provide the very best care to our patients. Every member of our team pursues continuing education to expand our skills and knowledge, and we also hold weekly meetings to discuss the latest advances in our field and determine how they can benefit our patients. Our clinic provides a wide variety of physical therapy services, and we have hundreds of satisfied patients – many of whom have shared testimonials on our website. I would encourage prospective physical therapy patients to contact us with any questions they may have; we’d be happy to speak with them and provide the information they need to make an informed decision.

Physical Therapy Can Build Back Strength, Improve Mobility and Relieve Pain

Countless patients have discovered the effectiveness of a custom-designed physical therapy program to build back strength and mobility. Physical therapy can also relieve acute low back pain that results from an injury or accident, repetitive stress on a muscle or joint, or improper alignment when performing normal work and leisure activities.

If you are suffering from pain or limited mobility, a physical therapist can help you return to a more active lifestyle. With years of advanced training in anatomy, physiology, and body mechanics, physical therapists are experts in determining the root cause of pain. Their treatments involve developing a customized program of exercise, proper body mechanics, stretching, and flexibility training for each patient. A consultation with a physical therapist can be the first step to back-pain relief – without steroid injections, surgery or frequent physician office visits.

Studies Reveal Effectiveness of Physical Therapy for Low Back Pain

Physical therapy has long been a source of relief for millions of back pain sufferers. But did you know that among a respected group of orthopedic surgeons, physical therapy is considered to be part of the most effective treatment for certain causes of back pain? A review article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications as the most effective treatment in most cases of symptomatic lumbar degenerative disc disease – a common cause of low back pain.1

This report is good news for back pain sufferers who may think their only treatment option is surgery. Not true! The review concludes that physical therapy combined with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs will resolve symptoms of low back pain without surgery.

The effectiveness of physical therapy in treating low back pain is further supported by a recent study on Medicare patients. The study categorized its subjects into two groups: those who received physical therapy shortly after experiencing acute low back pain, and those who received therapy later. The findings revealed that patients who received physical therapy within four weeks of experiencing low back pain were less likely to receive lumbar surgery, epidural steroidal injections, or frequent doctor’s office visits in the year following their initial physician visit.2

Heal Your Back With Strength and Flexibility Training and Other Non-Invasive Treatments

Treatment for low back pain and spine rehabilitation can begin with a doctor’s prescription for a physical therapy evaluation. Once your therapist establishes the source of your pain, you will receive a specially designed physical therapy treatment plan. Your customized plan may include manual therapy, stretching and flexibility training, spine and joint stabilization, massage, and strength and flexibility training.

Even if you suffer from chronic back pain, it’s possible to find relief without surgery or other aggressive procedures. Physical therapy is a non-invasive way to help your body heal itself. In addition, a physical therapist can help you avoid future injuries by teaching you how to strengthen your back muscles, move correctly, and keep your spine in proper position for your daily activities.

If your low back pain has persisted for more than a week, request a prescription for physical therapy from your doctor and set up an evaluation with a physical therapist. By following a physical therapy treatment program, you could soon be on your way to a pain-free, active lifestyle.

Physical Therapists: Experts in Treating Physical Ailments

As experts in body mechanics, physical therapists are qualified to treat patients who are experiencing pain, impaired mobility, or limitations in performing daily activities. In fact, whenever your body is not functioning at its optimum level, physical therapy can be the solution.

When you seek relief from a trained physical therapist, he or she will observe your movements and perform physical tests to assess your strength, flexibility, and pain level. Your physical therapist will then analyze your typical daily activities, strength, stamina, and range of motion to create a treatment program just for you. Throughout your treatment, your physical therapist will continue to assess your condition and adjust your plan accordingly.

A big advantage of physical therapy is the educational aspect of your treatment plan. Not only will your physical therapist provide stretching and flexibility training that can help you prevent injuries, but you will also learn how to properly care for your body as it heals. Finally, you will learn how to set fitness goals as you return to optimum health and a better quality of life.

Find a Qualified Physical Therapist to Meet Your Specific Needs

As demonstrated by numerous studies and countless satisfied patients, physical therapy can be a highly beneficial treatment for back-pain sufferers. If you’re interested in non-invasive treatment to stabilize your spine, build back strength and mobility, and return to the active lifestyle you enjoy, ask your doctor for a prescription for physical therapy. Your physical therapist will work with you to find the underlying cause of your pain and help to alleviate it for good.

Guidelines for Choosing a PT

I would encourage prospective physical therapy patients to contact us with any questions they may have; we’d be happy to speak with them and provide the information they need to make an informed decision.”

Two-Year Anniversary

The Sports and Physical Therapy Center Celebrates Two-Year Anniversary in North Central Avenue, Eureka, Location

Staff, Patients and Friends of the Sports and Physical Therapy Center Mark Second Anniversary in New Location With Sponsored Lions Run Event During Eureka Days 2011

EUREKA, Mo., September 26, 2011 – This month marks the second anniversary of the Sports and Physical Therapy Center’s move to its new, state-of-the-art facility. The Eureka-based physical therapy clinic, which was previously housed at 70 East North Street, relocated to its present site at 322 North Central Avenue in September 2009.

To celebrate the two-year anniversary of the new location, as well as the practice’s seventh year in business, Sports and Physical Therapy Center owner Sean Quinn hosted a special event in conjunction with the annual Lions Run for Sight. He invited the clinic’s staff and patients, along with their loved ones, to participate in the 5K run or 3K walk as part of a sponsored team.

This year’s Lions Run took place on September 10, as part of Eureka Days 2011. Quinn’s Sports and Physical Therapy Center team had a strong showing at the event, with 40 participants in total. After the Lions Run, team members walked back to the Sports and Physical Therapy Center for a celebration, which included a light breakfast and complimentary chair massages. The attendees then gathered to watch the Eureka Days Parade as it passed nearby.

“The Lions Run provided a perfect opportunity to celebrate the seventh anniversary of our clinic and our second anniversary here on North Central Avenue,” said Quinn. “Ever since we first opened the Sports and Physical Therapy Center, we’ve been recognized as a leading provider of physical therapy in St. Louis County. However, our broader goal has always been to contribute to the overall health and wellness of our entire community. The Lions Run allowed us to do just that, as it promotes physical fitness and supports the Lions Eye Care Fund. In addition, the post-run celebration gave us an opportunity to have some fun with patients and express our appreciation to them.”

Many of the participants shared positive feedback about the event. “It was a great experience,” enthused Allison Lee, a past patient. “There was a lot of support from the physical therapists, whom I now consider friends.” Lee’s sentiments were echoed by current patient Ronald Diekmann, who remarked, “The Sports and Physical Therapy Center has become like a family, and the run brought everyone together.” Staff member and Eureka resident Sonja McFarlane also noted a sense of kinship: “It was great to participate in a community event with my home family and my work family. I’m looking forward to next year’s run!”

Reflecting on the Sports and Physical Therapy Center’s second anniversary in its present location, Quinn credited the new facility with enabling his practice to grow: “Our new clinic is outstanding. We have ample space, which allows for more treatment options for patients of all ages. In addition, we can perform more sport-specific activities for our athletes recovering from injury, so they can return to the field faster. We’ve also been able to add new options that empower patients to manage their care once they’ve been discharged from therapy. And finally, the physical location is ideal – it’s close to the highway and offers plenty of parking. There are lots of windows and natural light, so it creates an upbeat, positive atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.”

Quinn encourages prospective new patients to request a physical therapy prescription from their doctor, and he welcomes them tour the new facility.
